Where the Ground Is

A short guide for young people crossing from the world of bodies and seasons into the world of agreements and machines. No one hands them a map. This is one.

Level 1 · The appleEat it or do not. The body answers fast. You arrive here, in the moment.
Feedback in hours
Level 2 · The seedPlant now, eat later. Waiting, luck, stored claims.
Feedback in seasons
Level 3 · The storyMoney, nations, law. Real while people agree.
Feedback past a lifetime
Level 4 · The machineMarkets, companies, AI. Fast action, slow consequence.
Runs the story at speed

Level 1 is the ground. Every level after it must stay tied to it.

Reader. Teens, about 13 and up, and the adults who raise them.

Form. Twelve short chapters, one scene each, under 1,500 words each. The chapters follow the levels. Every claim is marked fact or our idea.

The twelve chapters

Level 1

The moment. You arrive here.

1

You arrive trusting.

A newborn is tuned for connection and lives in the moment. A toddler hands you the thing you dropped, with no reward. Trust is a skill. Learning to spend it with care is also a skill, and it is not a flaw. The nest you got shaped how you spend it.

2

The apple.

You eat it or you do not. The body gives you the answer fast. Mistakes here are real, so you learned to tell food from poison.

Level 2

The seed. Later begins to matter.

3

The seed.

You plant now and eat later. You must wait, and you must trust that later will come. What you store becomes a claim on the future, and it may outlive you.

4

Luck and humility.

Soil, rain, timing, the right place and the right tide. Luck enters at this level and never leaves. Count your luck before you judge yourself or anyone else.

Level 3

The story. Agreement becomes real.

5

The story.

A dollar is paper that people agree on. A nation is a line that people agree on. Stories let millions cooperate. Stories can also be wrong, and the cost may come after you are gone.

6

Stop rules.

Enough. The day of rest. The debt reset. Older stories carried a place to stop. Ask which of your stories do, and which do not.

7

Power with and power over.

A leader the group can remove is power with. A leader no one can remove is power over. Test any group, any boss, any app by this rule.

Level 4

The machine. The story runs without you.

8

The machine.

Markets, companies and AI run the stories at speed. The action is fast. The consequence is slow and lands far away, on someone's body, river or air.

9

The bloom and the dish.

Anything that grows with no stop will foul its own water. A dish of bacteria. A herd of reindeer. A bloom of algae. The oldest case is the air itself, 2.4 billion years ago.

Across all four levels

The tests, and the aim.

10

Three questions for any story or system.

What is it tied to in Levels 1 and 2? How fast would I learn it was wrong? Who can correct it, or remove the person running it?

11

When to spend trust.

How to tell a reliable person from an unreliable one. How to go deep with a few. How to repair after a break.

12

What wisdom looks like.

A long view. Claims checked against the body and the planet. Humility about luck. One page for each, with a test.

The map is not the ground

Rows: the level an actor works from. Columns: the level it acts on.

Above the diagonal, experience feeds up into abstraction. Below it, abstraction lands on bodies. Wisdom is traffic in both directions. Harm is heavy traffic down with none coming up.

Box 1,1 is a limit. You know the body only through a layer in your head, and so does everyone else. Seeing this makes it easier to be kind to yourself and to others.

AI sits in box 4,4. It has no Level 1 of its own. It touches Level 2 only when told to think about the future. Our idea, not a finding.

For the adult

You are the nest. A child waits when you keep your promises. Keep a few, and keep them in view.

Shared fate

One idea at four scales.

The child

The best way to keep my child safe is to keep all children safe.

The country

The best way to ensure my country's security is to ensure every country's security.

The planet

This planet has given us everything that we have, and it should belong to everyone, not just to a few.

The work

AI is here to do all the work so that we can do all the thinking about how fortunate we are to have such a beautiful place to live.

What we know, and what we think

Fact, with a source

Toddler helping (Warneken and Tomasello). Waiting and reliability (Kidd). School and IQ (Ritchie and Tucker-Drob). Banding and equality (Boehm). Materials doubling (Elhacham, from memory). Debt totals (IIF reports). Limits to Growth comparisons (Turner, Herrington).

Our idea, marked as such

The four levels. The removal test. The stop-rule thesis. The nest-to-kingdom link. Wisdom as a three-part test.
